AI2

Asset integrity services from initial construction to decommission

Background

Non destructive testing is a way of using ultrasound to detect the quality of a welded joint. Every major joint in a structure must be tested and the overall condition of the structure (like an oil rig) is referred to as asset integrity. These tests have to be logged and verified by clients and regulators.

The Problem

Welding is more of an art than a science. Improper technique can introduce flaws in the weld which can compromise the integrity of the structure.

Additionally, the different stakeholders involved have different acceptance criteria for weld quality. The industry lacks a transparent, objective way to track weld quality and overall asset integrity.

The Solution

AI2  increases accuracy, removes subjectivity, lowers costs and improves traceability with the use of Artificial Intelligence. AI2 is a SaaS platform that connects asset integrity services and data from initial construction through to decommissioning.

In simple terms, artificial intelligence interprets the non destructive testing scans, not humans.

My Role

Lead Experience Designer

On AI2, I developed the concept, then delegated ownership to another UX designer to build the prototype. My challenge was to guide the outcome without becoming involved at a granular level.

I collaborated with her to build the user flow, journey mapping and storytelling of the prototype. I offered UI design critiques and provided the framework for a UX workshop that she facilitated.

Concept Development

The goal of concept testing was to prove desirability to the venture board who would decide whether the concept would move forward to prototyping.

To do that, the research team needed provocations for user testing. I created  wireframes to demonstrate the concept.

I also managed the work of a storyboard artist. The goal was to show the concept in action through a narrative. I provided the illustrator with thumbnail sketches to guide his work.

Prototyping

The following screens were designed by my colleague with my feedback.

Lessons Learned

As a Lead Experience Designer, to maximize your value, you have to be able to delegate ownership of work to your colleagues. It's important to guide, advise and provide feedback, but you can't get involved at a granular level, otherwise you lose the advantage that delegation provides.

To achieve success, I had to empower my colleague to understand the concept and the context around it. I provided her with a workshop framework to get the content she needed. I knew that she was a competent UI designer and Visual Designer, so once she had the knowledge she needed, all I had to do was provide feedback.

Watching a colleague succeed is one of the best experiences I have had in my career.
